Madurai’s recent rainfall has brought more than just relief from the scorching heat; it has also unveiled a host of infrastructure challenges. Several areas across the city now resemble accident-prone zones due to poorly laid bitumen and the emergence of potholes. Moreover, sewage leakage from manholes further compounds the problem, creating hazardous conditions for commuters.

One notable area affected by these issues is the junction at East Avani Moola Street, frequented by tourists visiting the Meenakshi Sundareshwarar Temple. However, the sorry state of the road poses a stark contrast to the temple’s grandeur. Potholes mar the surface, exacerbating during the recent rains, leading to water stagnation. Additionally, a persistent sewage leak from a nearby manhole has only added to the woes of locals and visitors alike.

Expressing frustration, M. Ganesan, a shopkeeper, lamented the prolonged neglect by the corporation in addressing these issues. Despite recent efforts to unclog the manhole, the problem persists, causing sewage to spill onto the streets once again. Nearby vendors echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the health hazards posed by the deteriorating road conditions, especially for barefoot devotees.

The plight extends to other areas as well. The E2 Road in Narimedu is plagued by sizable potholes, exacerbated by stagnant water post-rainfall, making it a potential hotspot for accidents. Similarly, K.K. Nagar West 4th Street is rendered nearly impassable due to recent underground drainage works, compounded by the rainfall, resulting in a muddy, uneven surface that impedes traffic flow.

As Madurai grapples with these infrastructure woes, residents hope for prompt action from authorities to alleviate their commuting nightmares and ensure safer roads for all.
