External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar made pointed remarks, indirectly targeting Maldives President Mohamad Muizzu, stating that “big bullies don’t provide $4.5 billion aid” during times of distress in neighboring countries. This comment comes amidst rising tensions between India and Maldives, reflecting the complex diplomatic landscape in the region.

Jaishankar’s statement was a response to questions about India being perceived as a “bully” in the subcontinent and Indian Ocean region, particularly after Muizzu’s earlier remarks asserting that no country had the right to “bully” Maldives, despite its size.

Speaking at an event while promoting his book ‘Why Bharat Matters,’ Jaishankar highlighted India’s proactive role in extending timely assistance to its neighbors during crises. He emphasized India’s substantial contributions, including financial aid, vaccine supplies, and exceptions to trade rules, aimed at addressing the urgent needs of neighboring countries.

The Minister’s comments underscored the significant strides made in India’s relationships with its neighbors, citing improved connectivity, infrastructure development, and enhanced trade and investment ties. He acknowledged positive developments in India’s relations with countries like Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and even the Maldives, except for one country, which remains a diplomatic challenge.

The diplomatic tensions between India and Maldives surfaced in January when three Maldivian ministers were suspended for derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The situation escalated with discussions surrounding the withdrawal of Indian military personnel from the island nation, reflecting divergent geopolitical interests.

President Muizzu, perceived as a pro-China leader, expressed intentions to reduce foreign military presence in the Maldives, signaling a shift in strategic alliances.

Despite the complexities, Jaishankar maintained optimism about diplomatic resolutions and highlighted Bhutan’s consistent partnership. He emphasized the importance of diplomatic efforts in fostering positive relationships and resolving outstanding issues.

The evolving dynamics between India and Maldives, alongside broader regional developments, reflect the intricate interplay of geopolitical interests and diplomatic maneuvering in South Asia.
