On the historic day of September 2, 2023, as India’s pioneering space-based solar observatory, Aditya L1, set sail to unravel the mysteries of the Sun, a somber revelation unfolded within the corridors of the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro). S Somnath, the esteemed Isro Chief, received a diagnosis that would alter the course of his life.

In a candid interview with Tarmak Media House, Somnath disclosed the unexpected turn of events. Routine medical scans conducted on the day of the Aditya-L1 mission’s launch unearthed a growth in his stomach, marking the onset of a daunting battle against cancer.

Reflecting on the disconcerting revelation, Somnath revealed, “There were some health issues during Chandrayaan-3 mission launch. However, it was not clear to me at the time, I did not have a clear understanding about it.” The diagnosis, announced on the very day of the Aditya-L1 launch, sent shockwaves not only through Somnath but also resonated deeply with his family and colleagues, who stood steadfast by his side during this arduous journey.

Subsequent scans in Chennai confirmed the presence of a hereditary disease, catapulting Somnath into a realm of uncertainty and resilience. Braving an operation followed by chemotherapy, Somnath’s narrative is one of fortitude and perseverance.

“It was a shock for the family. But now, I perceive cancer and its treatment as a solution,” Somnath reflected, embodying a remarkable strength of character amidst adversity. Acknowledging the ongoing nature of his battle, he remained uncertain about a complete cure during the treatment process.

However, his journey towards recovery has defied expectations. After a mere four-day hospital stay, Somnath resolutely resumed his duties at Isro on the fifth day, undeterred by the challenges that lay ahead. “I will be undergoing regular checkups and scans. But, now I am completely cured, and have resumed my duties,” Somnath affirmed, epitomizing resilience and hope in the face of adversity.
