MADURAI: Two youths in Madurai embarked on an all-India tricycle expedition Tuesday to spread a green message.

It was six months ago that P Sirajdeen, 23 and his friend R Arunkumar, 23, decided to take out an All-India trip. The mode of transport the youngsters finalized was something novel, a tricycle predominantly used in Madurai markets and elsewhere for moving a smaller quantity
of commodities from big trucks.

Sirajdeen has completed his MBA while Arunkumar has completed his MCA. They have been involved in local green activities like planting trees. So, they decided to plant trees across the country and pooled together their resources. “We bought a tricycle five months ago, and we have been practising every day,” said Sirajdeen.

Tricycle riding requires strength and skill to maintain balance and steer straight while peddling. “We wanted to try something different. Maybe, we will be the first ones to ride across India in this kind of vehicle,” said Arunkumar.

Besides, the tricycle is more convenient to store all their backpacks, tents as well as saplings and tree guards. They are carrying 50 saplings and seed balls as of now and are planning to replenish them on the way from local nurseries. The tricycle is also decorated with the social awareness banners like rape and drug-free India.

The duo also decided to take out awareness programmes on clean and green India wherever possible. They have planned to halt at petrol pumps and truck laybys for the night halt. The six-month tricycle expedition will go through Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Jammu & Kashmir, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Northeast, West Bengal, Odisha, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh before returning to Tamil Nadu.

They started their expedition from Jaihindpuram in Madurai after the blessing of their family members. “This is going to be a life-changing adventure for both of us,” the youngsters said.
