Water released from Vaigai dam

For single crop areas in Madurai, Dindigul and Sivaganga

Water was released from Vaigai dam for irrigation of single crop areas in Madurai, Dindigul and Sivaganga districts on Wednesday. Theni Collector M. Pallavi Baldev formally opened the sluices of the dam.

The Collector said 1,130 cusecs of water was being released from the dam for irrigation of 1,05,002 acres – 85,563 acres of single crop areas covered by Periyar Main Canal and 19,439 acres of single crop areas covered by Tirumangalam Main Channel.

Water would be released for 120 days depending on the storage and inflow of water into the dam. Around 98,764 acres in Madurai district, 199 acres in Dindigul district and 6,039 acres in Sivaganga district would be benefited.

The Collector advised farmers to use the water judiciously and opt for short-term crop varieties to reap a good yield.

District Revenue Officers N. Kandasamy (Theni), P. Selvaraj (Madurai), Executive Engineer (Water Resources Organisation), Periyar Vaigai Basin Division, T. Subramanian, Executive Engineer of Periyar Main Channel Division (Melur) Sundarappan, Periyakulam Revenue Divisional Officer Jeyapreetha, and Assistant Executive Engineers Selvam, Kubendran, Anandan and Mayakrishnan, apart from representatives of farmers’ organisations, were present.
