Madurai – Studies reveal sexual harassment at various bus stands2nd April 2019
A booklet, titled ‘A Survey on Harassment Faced by Women Commuters in Four Major Bus Stands in Madurai City’ was released by Madras High Court judge, Justice Vineet Kothari. The booklet was prepared on the basis of a survey which was carried out by the students of Lady Doak College (LDC). According to the information shared in the booklet, there are various types of sexual harassment that are faced by women passengers at Madurai bus stands.
The survey was conducted by the college after they came to know about the sexual harassment that is faced by the students of the college that use public transport to get to the institute. The survey covered four major bus stands of Madurai; MGR Bus Terminal at Matthuthavani, Periyar Bus Terminal (now closed for renovation), Arapalayam bus stand and Thirumangalam bus stand.
Ann Nirmala, coordinator of Centre for Women’s Studies said that they were surprised at the high amount of incidents. She said that every woman they spoke with revealed one or the other sexual harassment. She also mentioned that upon asking a few boys and men (whom they suspected to have done the act) accepted that they did that as a form of entertainment.
