Tensions rise in Surat as Congress workers voice dissent following the BJP’s uncontested victory in Gujarat’s Surat Lok Sabha seat. Mukesh Dalal, the BJP’s candidate, secured the seat unopposed after the rejection of Nilesh Kumbhani’s nomination and the withdrawal of eight other candidates.

Protests erupted outside Nilesh Kumbhani’s residence as speculations emerged about his potential defection to the BJP. Sources indicate that Kumbhani, whose nomination form was rejected due to alleged discrepancies, may join the BJP in the coming days.

The demonstration follows the declaration of Mukesh Dalal as the winner from the BJP stronghold, with all other candidates withdrawing from the race. Protesters labeled Kumbhani as a “traitor” and criticized him as a “killer of democracy.”

Kumbhani’s nomination was invalidated after he failed to produce one of his three proposers before Returning Officer Sourabh Pardhi. The BJP had raised concerns about inconsistencies in the signatures of Kumbhani’s proposers, prompting the rejection of his nomination.

Similarly, the nomination of Suresh Padsala, the Congress’ substitute candidate, was also invalidated, effectively eliminating the party from contention in the BJP stronghold.

In his ruling, Returning Officer Pardhi cited discrepancies in the signatures of the proposers and deemed them to be not genuine, leading to the rejection of the nomination forms.

With the Lok Sabha elections in the Surat seat originally scheduled for May 7, the political landscape in the region remains tense amid speculations of defection and opposition outcry.
